In EUSD, every student is an Empowered Learner, equipped with the resources and encouragement to excel in and out of the classroom – whether it’s demonstrating their strategies in a math lesson or serving as a leader in their campus community.

In Zonia Moreno’s dual language immersion classroom at Glen View Elementary, 4th-graders took turns working out a math problem on the smart board, explaining their work. Then, Mrs Moreno would call on a classmate to respond to their peer’s problem-solving. Meanwhile, two other students acted as class representatives to greet visitors, speaking to their guests in both English and Spanish as they explained the day’s Government In Action “EQ” – Essential Question: How can government influence the way we live?

At Hidden Valley Middle School, the WEB Leaders program has grown beyond an orientation program to help 6th-graders adjust to a new campus. Hidden Valley WEB Leaders – Where Everybody Belongs – are 8th-graders who serve as ambassadors year-round for their entire school community. The WEB Leaders program is now an elective class with robust participation. ”I chose to be a WEB leader because I want to help,” Nick, a WEB Leaders member, shared. “I want to help classmates feel like school is their second home.”

These are among the countless ways that every EUSD student is empowered to excel in all aspects of their learning, from mathematics to citizenship!

Here are this week’s updates and reminders.

Commission vacancy: EUSD is accepting applications to fill a vacancy on the Personnel Commission for a three-year term, beginning December 1, 2023. The Personnel Commission is a nonpartisan public body responsible for the administration of a merit system for the selection, retention, and promotion of non-teaching – classified employees – in EUSD. The three-member commission is composed of an individual appointed by the Board of Education, an individual nominated by classified employees, and an individual appointed by the other two personnel commissioners. The commission typically convenes once a month in a public meeting. For complete details and to submit an application, visit the Personnel Commission webpage. A letter of interest and application must be submitted by 4 p.m. Friday, September 29, to Ashley Bird at abird@eusd.org or at the district office, 2310 Aldergrove Avenue.

Design Team: The 2023-2024 Design Team kicked off on Wednesday, and I’m excited to share that the focus this year will be on the implementation of the visionary Framework for the Future. This framework, introduced in spring following an extraordinary collaborative journey, defines the newly developed EUSD Learning Model and Learning Profile, and identifies our learner experiences that will help achieve our whole-child outcomes. Now comes the work on details and planning of what this looks like, of putting into practice the strategic work of this team. We have identified five “Big Moves” to be rolled out over the next few years, including the inaugural cohort of School Redesign campuses – Limitless Learning Academy, L.R. Green Elementary, Mission Middle School, and North Broadway Elementary. The Design Team, launched in 2019, is an internal strategic planning group whose members are stakeholders who truly represent our community – teachers, parents, administrators, support staff, and more – working together using the tenets of design thinking. We look forward to sharing our progress with you!
