In EUSD, every student is an Ethical Scholar – an individual who finds opportunities to make
a positive impact on their community and demonstrates integrity, respect, and compassion.
An Ethical Scholar is one of the six whole-learner outcomes that comprise the new EUSD Learner Profile in our Blueprint for the Future. The 2022-2023 Design Team has been focused on developing a Learning Model that establishes the learning experiences to achieve our whole-child outcomes.
In our schools, an Ethical Scholar stands up for what is right in pursuit of making a positive social impact; holds oneself accountable for thoughts, words, and actions; and seeks to understand diverse perspectives and cultures.
As we prepare to launch the Blueprint for the Future for the 2023-2024 school year, we are proud to share how the characteristics of our students as Ethical Scholars stand out every day through curriculum, clubs, and countless activities. For example, this year’s theme for art lessons at L.R. Green Elementary was “Celebrating the World,” which included the study of cultural art forms and artworks that expressed community, peace, family, and other cultures.
At North Broadway Elementary, students in the Peace Patrol take on the leadership of their school, helping students be respectful, and to solve problems or conflicts peacefully. Principal Cherry Moore added that Peace Patrol members also lead activities for the annual Great Kindness Challenge, including creating public service announcements. At Bernardo Elementary, Principal Jeremy Lyche shared that every school year, each grade level takes on a community service project. Bernardo kindergartners this year collected books to donate to children in local hospitals. The Pay it Forward Club at Central Elementary started more than 10 years ago as a way to give back to the community around the neighborhood school. During the club’s monthly meetings, members from all grade levels participate in activities like donation drives or writing letters to veterans or residents in nursing homes. The meetings always include a campus clean-up. “The lesson is, when you do good you feel good,” said Shannon Wrzeski, an EUSD assistant principal who co-founded the club with Central 5th-grade teacher Laura Guajardo.
One of EUSD’s signature annual events, the Season for Peace and Nonviolence celebration presented by our Integrated Student Supports team, honors students and staff members who stand out for their engagement during social-emotional learning lessons and who exemplify the traits associated with this season, such as kindness and compassion toward others, community service, and social justice advocacy.
