DEFINITION
Under general supervision of the Warehouse Supervisor, performs a variety of duties related to the receipt, storage, inventory control, distribution and delivery of foodstuffs, instructional materials, other supplies, and equipment in a school district warehouse; drives a District delivery vehicle to pick up and deliver supplies, equipment, and/or food to schools, school cafeterias, and other district facilities; and performs other related duties as assigned.

TYPICAL DUTIES
A. IN THE DISTRICT (STORES) WAREHOUSE:
Loads, delivers, and unloads supplies, equipment, books, and other materials from the district warehouse to all schools and other district facilities; collects and delivers cash bags following established procedures; assists in the loading and unloading of vendor’s trucks; transfers materials between schools, the warehouse, and other district facilities.
Picks up and delivers mail to and from District sites and the U.S Post Office in accordance with an established schedule; sorts mail and maintains related files and records; prepares outgoing shipments as directed; applies appropriate postage to outgoing mail; assists sites in bulk mail preparation and delivery.
Assists in the receiving, storing, and disbursing of supplies; inspects shipments for damage and conformity to purchase order specifications and packing slips; acknowledges and updates shipments electronically; reports shortages, damages and other discrepancies to supervisor; shelves and stores supplies using proper warehouse and first-in first-out (FIFO) inventory guidelines.
Processes requisitions and purchase orders by counting, measuring, labeling and packaging items for delivery to various locations; assists in tracking the movement of supplies and fixed assets in accordance with established guidelines.
Assists in processing fixed asset items purchased, surplused by, or donated to the District; tags and records District identification numbers on acquired fixed assets, using applicable tools and software.
Maintains records related to the receipt, storage and requisition of materials, supplies, and fixed assets using established guidelines; generates computerized lists and reports.
Coordinates with various District offices, including purchasing and accounting, and outside vendors to exchange information and resolve straightforward issues requiring standard verification of information to obtain quick resolution.
Assists in inventory control and annual inventory of warehouse stock, and in keeping the warehouse clean, organized, and safe.
Completes standard vehicle safety and maintenance inspections, and reports vehicle malfunctions to supervisor.
Operates a variety of machines and equipment including delivery trucks with tailgate, lifts, forklifts, reach truck (aisle stacker), pallet jack, scale, hand trucks, and other warehouse equipment as needed.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
B. IN NUTRITION SERVICES
Loads, delivers, and unloads food and other supplies from the food service storeroom and preparation kitchens to all schools; assists in the loading and unloading of vendor’s trucks; transfers food, mail, and other supplies between school cafeterias; collects daily cash bags and delivers them to nutrition department.
Maintains records related to the receipt, storage and requisition of food and nutrition supplies using established guidelines.
Assists in receiving, recording, and inspecting shipments for temperature, damage, and conformity, checking against invoices for accuracy; acknowledges and updates shipments; report shortages, damages and other discrepancies to supervisor.
Shelves and stores food, equipment, and supplies received in the appropriate section of the warehouse using proper food safety storage guidelines; keeps the storage areas and walk-in refrigerators and freezers clean and organized ensuring compliance with food safety laws, rules, and regulations.
Uses the first-in first-out (FIFO) inventory system; checks manufacturer code dates; marks food cases/containers with the date of receipt; ensures rotation of stock for optimal food freshness in warehouse and at school sites.
Using a computerized inventory system, receives and processes daily food and supply orders from school sites; reviews and fills orders according to established procedures; selects and stages food and supply orders for timely delivery to sites.
Maintains records related to the receipt, storage and requisition of food, and nutrition supplies, using established guidelines; generates computerized lists and reports.
Coordinates with site kitchens and nutrition department, and outside vendors to exchange information and resolve straightforward issues requiring standard verification of information to obtain quick resolution.
Assists in conducting physical inventory of foodstuff and related items.
Completes standard vehicle safety and maintenance inspections, and reports vehicle malfunctions to supervisor.
Operates a variety of machines and equipment including delivery trucks with tailgate lifts, forklifts, reach truck (aisle stacker), pallet jack, scale, hand trucks, and other warehouse equipment as needed.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Warehouse Worker I is the entry-level classification in the series. Incumbents work in either the District stores or Nutrition Services warehouse operation and receive, store, load, and deliver goods as assigned by either a Warehouse Worker II and/or Warehouse Supervisor. Warehouse Worker II is the senior-level classification. Incumbents are lead workers of the stores or nutrition services warehouse operation, assigned to assist the supervisor in ensuring the material or products are received, stored, and distributed in an efficient and timely manner.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
Knowledge of: Basic methods, procedures and terminology of storing, inventory control, record keeping, and food storage; safe driving and vehicle maintenance principles; proper methods of loading and unloading delivery vehicles.
Ability to: Operate a vehicle safely; learn to operate a computer terminal and applicable software accurately and effectively; operate electronic handheld device; read and compare names and numbers quickly and accurately; understand and follow oral and written instructions; meet schedules and timelines; work cooperatively and effectively with supervisors, administrators, co-workers, students, and the general public; maintain accurate records; perform basic arithmetical calculations; maintain a reliable attendance record; operate a step van, forklift, manual and electric pallet jacks, dollies, postage meter, scales, calculator and other related equipment.
Essential Physical Activities and Work Environment: Sufficient stamina to stand, walk, climb, kneel, reach, twist, crouch, squat, balance and bend in the performance of warehouse functions on a daily basis; stamina to work in refrigerators and sub-zero freezers for extended periods of time. Needs sufficient physical ability to lift, carry, push, or pull moderately heavy objects up to 50 lbs. without assistance and up to 100 lbs. with assistance; mobility to climb and descend ladders; sufficient finger dexterity to grasp, push, and pull objects (e.g. boxes, hand carts, pallets, ladders, textbooks, mailbags, bags of food items, steering wheel); sufficient stamina to perform moderate to heavy manual labor on a daily basis; sufficient dexterity to work in confined areas; sufficient hearing and speaking to give and receive instructions; and vision sufficient to observe work areas, operate a vehicle and computer terminal, and read fine print; mobility sufficient to drive a vehicle to various District locations.
Work is usually performed in a District Warehouse or driving to other District locations and typically involves walking, standing, climbing ladders, reaching overhead, bending, heavy lifting, seeing, hearing, talking and sitting. Work includes exposure to potential hazards related to traffic, fumes and inclement weather.
In the Stores Warehouse the job generally requires 25% sitting, 50% walking, and 25% standing.
In the Nutrition Warehouse the job generally requires 15% sitting, 50% walking, and 35% standing.
Typical Background: Any combination of training that demonstrates the knowledge and abilities to perform the typical duties. A usual way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be at least one year of experience which includes driving light trucks or vans in the delivery of materials and/or working in a stock room or warehouse. A good driving record is required.
Licenses and/or Certificates: Possession of a valid Class C California driver’s license. Must meet District vehicle and liability insurance requirements, as appropriate. May be required to obtain job-related certificates after appointment. For positions assigned to the Nutrition Services department, a valid Food Handler’s certificate must be obtained by the completion of the probationary period or the first 6 months of employment if new to the department.
Qualifications: In order to be considered qualified for a vacancy in this classification, a candidate must possess the required background and successfully demonstrate such background, knowledge, skills and abilities through an examination process.
