TEACHER ON SPECIAL ASSIGNMENT: SPECIAL EDUCATION COACH

JOB DESCRIPTION

PRIMARY FUNCTION

Under the direction of the Assistant Superintendent of Student Support Services or designee, the Teacher on Special Assignment: Special Education Coach is responsible for assisting special education teachers with instructional support and classroom management including IEP paperwork and processes and procedures.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Specific responsibilities will include but will not be limited to the following:

  • Works directly with special education and general education staff to provide classroom-based demonstrations, collaborative and one-on-one support.

  • Models and/or provides small group intervention program for special education students in grades pre-k through 8th grade.

  • Guides teachers to collect and analyze data, develops action plans to develop goals and objectives, and monitors student progress.

  • Assists in the planning and facilitation of staff development and training of special education certificated and classified staff in matters pertaining to special education programs and services.

  • Collaborates with the Educational Services Department in providing districtwide professional development.

  • Provides intern supervision and coaching to teachers using a variety of coaching models and strategies.

  • Participates on special education and/or district committees.

  • Models best teaching practices and effective instructional strategies including, but not limited to, Universal Design for Learning (UDL) strategies related to Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and Common Core Connectors (CCCs).

  • Collaborates and works effectively with various teams and individuals.

  • Engages in ongoing professional growth to stay current in new developments in the field of special education.

  • May be assigned a caseload of special education students.

  • May be assigned to various sites.

  • Researches and provides content knowledge and resources to staff regarding CCSS and CCCs as it relates to special education; lesson design and delivery; technology innovation; and literacy across content areas including teaching strategies, assessment techniques, and interpretation of assessment results to drive instruction.

  • Assists with academic assessment.

  • Gather and review appropriate resources to meet the individual needs of students.

  • Organize and schedule staff development opportunities for special education teachers.

  • May attend IEP meetings.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE OF

Federal and State laws and regulations surrounding the provision of special education services and district policies and procedures; principles, theories, techniques and strategies pertaining to the teaching and instruction of students with special needs; educational curriculum and instructional goals and objectives, and the educational trends and research findings pertaining to students with disabilities; behavior management and behavior shaping strategies; current technology, usage and functions of assistive technology and communication devices, computers, and a variety of hardware and software; accommodations and modifications for students.

ABILITY TO

Organize, plan and deliver appropriate strategies for planning, recommending services and implement instruction, including the use of supplementary aides, services and technology, manage learning environments that are safe and effective; collaborate and communicate effectively both orally and in writing; establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with all stakeholders; mentor, peer coach and conduct professional development; design data tracking sheets for students; ability to maintain, analyze and synthesize data; follow applicable state and federal timelines; understand and carry out oral and written directions with minimal accountability controls.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions requires the following physical demands: hearing and speaking to exchange information and make presentations; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard; have a means of transportation to conduct work; seeing to conduct inspections of data; and occasional lifting of boxes and equipment and bending or reaching for files and equipment. Weight of materials will vary, but generally less than fifty (50) pounds. Generally, the job requires 35% sitting, 30% walking and 35% standing. May be required to correctly transfer or restrain a child physically if needed. Will work with students who have significant academic and social/emotional needs. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations, a generally hazard free environment and in a clean atmosphere.

LICENSES/ CREDENTIALS/ EXPERIENCE

Possession of a valid California Education Specialist Instruction Credential—Mild/Moderate or Moderate/Severe Disabilities, Specialist Credential in Special Education—Learning Handicapped/Severely Handicapped or equivalent.

Five years’ experience in special education

Must pass pre-employment physical examination and fingerprint clearance following an offer of employment.
