JOB DESCRIPTION

PRIMARY FUNCTION

Under the direction of the Site Principal or designee, the on-call certificated substitute teacher is assigned to work, on an as needed basis, in the absence of a regular teacher to aid students in understanding a subject matter, as well as to provide skills required for programmed lessons and purposeful training for the classroom he/she is assigned.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Specific responsibilities will include but will not be limited to the following:

  • Follows classroom systems/procedures established by regular classroom teacher; implements lesson plans; classroom activities, and attendance tracking.

  • Provides regular classroom teacher with timely information on classroom activity and student progress.

  • Maintains discipline and classroom control that fosters a safe and positive environment for all students and staff in accordance with school and district policies.

  • Maintains and respects confidentiality of student and school personnel information.

  • Ensures the adequate supervision to assure safety, health, and welfare of all students.

  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.

  • Reports to office upon arrival at school; checks mailbox of absent teacher for materials requiring immediate attention; requests clarification of school rules and procedures, if necessary.

  • Reports all student injuries, accidents, illnesses, and discipline problems to the appropriate authority immediately or as soon as is reasonably possible.

  • Returns instructional materials, equipment, and keys to proper place.

  • Determines if his/her services will be required for the next school day.

  • Complies with and supports school and division regulations and policies

  • Models non-discriminatory practices in all activities

  • Communicates with parents through a variety of means to discuss student’s progress.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned by building administrator(s) in accordance with school/division policies and practices.

KNOWLEDGE OF

Federal and State laws and regulations surrounding the provision of education services and district policies and procedures; current technology, usage and functions of assistive technology and communication devices, computers, and a variety of hardware and software; accommodations and modifications for students. Knowledge of school site emergency plan. Knowledge of professional responsibilities regarding any requirements for maintaining valid teaching or substitute credential.

ABILITY TO

Ability to implement all areas listed under “Knowledge” into practice to produce a positive and effective learning environment, which addresses the needs of all students, monitors progress of students, adjusts instructional strategies according to students needs and accurately report student progress. Ability to organize, plan and deliver instruction; collaborate and communicate effectively both orally and in writing; establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with all stakeholders; design data tracking sheets for students if needed; ability to maintain, analyze and synthesize data; follow applicable state and federal timelines; understand and carry out oral and written directions with minimal accountability controls. Ability to provide for student safety under routine and emergency conditions. Ability to utilize resources effectively. Ability to follow directions accurately.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions requires the following physical demands: hearing and speaking to exchange information and make presentations; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard; driving a vehicle to conduct work as needed; seeing to conduct inspections of data; and occasional lifting of boxes and equipment and bending or reaching for files and equipment. Weight of materials will vary, but generally less than fifty pounds. Generally the job requires 30% sitting, 30% walking and 40% standing. May be required to correctly transfer or restrain a child physically if needed. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations, a generally hazard free environment and in a clean atmosphere.

LICENSES/ CREDENTIALS/ EXPERIENCE

Possession of a valid California teaching credential or 30-Day Substitute Permit.
