JOB DESCRIPTION

PRIMARY FUNCTION

Under the direction of the Preschool Coordinator or designee, the State Preschool Teacher provides an education program for preschool-age students and adult parent participants.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Specific responsibilities will include but will not be limited to the following:

  • Diagnose, plan, develop, implement, and evaluate appropriate learning activities for students.

  • Utilize a variety of appropriate teaching techniques and methods.

  • Utilize adopted curriculum materials, equipment, and resources.

  • Monitor student progress by collecting evidence for the Desired Results Developmental Profile (DRDP) assessment tool.

  • Provide individualized educational supports to develop each student’s abilities and talents.

  • Conduct conferences with students and parents, twice a year.

  • Establish appropriate relationships with students, both individually and in groups.

  • Help to develop in the student a positive self-image, and understanding of self and of others.

  • Provide opportunities for students to accept responsibilities.

  • Assist the student in establishing and achieving educational goals.

  • Conference with support personnel about individual children’s needs and make appropriate referrals when necessary.

  • Demonstrate willingness to accept change or suggestions.

  • Maintain student rapport and classroom control.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of subject matter.

  • Meet the San Diego Department of Education’s Course of Study when applicable; meet the District adopted Course of Study, and the California Education Code, when appropriate.

  • Maintain the student to adult ratio of 8:1 at all times.

  • Meet obligations as specified by the Board of Education in Board policies.

  • Keep informed of current educational trends and developments through professional literature, attendance at conferences, classes, meetings, seminars, etc.

  • Share in responsibility for effective operation of the school program.

  • Use own talents to meet situational needs and implement the basic course of study.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE OF

Understanding of learning theory, current California Preschool Curriculum Framework and California Preschool Learning Foundations, teaching standards, a wide variety of effective teaching strategies, child growth and development and the social/emotional needs thereof, motivation, retention, and transfer theory, effective lesson planning, discipline, effective classroom management strategies, working with parents, appropriate SDAIE instructional techniques for English learning students, learning disabilities and mainstreaming of students with disabilities into the regular classroom, technology uses in the instructional process, district policies and administrative regulations regarding teaching responsibilities and other areas that affect the organization and delivery of services to students. Knowledge of the State Preschool agency plan and school site and district emergency procedures. Knowledge of professional responsibilities regarding any requirements for maintaining valid teaching permits.

ABILITY TO

Plan, organize, and deliver instruction. Ability to work as a team member with other staff members, and in a cooperative relationship with supervisor(s). Ability to integrate subject areas in instruction to produce meaningful standards-based program. Ability to provide for student safety under routine and emergency conditions. Ability to utilize resources effectively. Ability to follow directions accurately. Ability to demonstrate student progress and achievement through on-going assessment and monitoring.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions requires the following physical demands: hearing and speaking to exchange information and make presentations; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard; have a means of transportation to conduct work; seeing to conduct inspections of data; and occasional lifting of boxes and equipment and bending or reaching for files and equipment. Weight of materials will vary, but generally less than fifty (50) pounds. Generally, the job requires 35% sitting, 30% walking and 35% standing. May be required to correctly transfer or restrain a child physically if needed. Will work with students who have significant academic and social/emotional needs. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations, a generally hazard free environment and in a clean atmosphere.

PERMIT/JOB REQUIREMENTS

Possession of any of the following permits: Teacher, Master Teacher, Site Supervisor or Program Director

Must pass pre-employment physical examination and fingerprint clearance following an offer of employment.

A one-time submission of proof of Pertussis and Measles vaccines via immunization record or a signed letter from a licensed physician documenting current immunity to Pertussis and Measles or a signed letter declaring that immunizations are unsafe due to physical condition or medical circumstance.

Annual documentation of influenza vaccination or a written declaration declining the influenza vaccine.

Bachelor’s Degree desired
