JOB DESCRIPTION

PRIMARY FUNCTION

Under the direction of the Assistant Superintendent of Student Support Services or designee and School Principals, the School Psychologist performs a variety of professional activities involved in the consultation, eligibility, services, and additional assessments to students, families, staff, administrators and others; participate in the planning, development and implementation of Individualized Education Plans (IEP’s), behavior plans, and educational goals and services; provide Educationally Related Mental Health Services (ERMHS) counseling and psychological services; and conduct observation, assessment and treatment of mental health issues among identified students with special needs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Specific responsibilities will include but will not be limited to the following:

  • Complete assessment plans, thorough initial evaluations, additional assessments and triennial re-evaluations within district, state and federal guidelines and develop legally compliant IEP’s and assessment reports. Upload all signed assessment reports to the Special Education Information System.

  • Evaluate the results of tests in relation to the cultural, environmental, and language backgrounds of students.

  • Participate as a member of the IEP team to develop IEP goals, objectives, adaptations, accommodations, modifications and instructional plans; implement and monitor the IEP per designated psychological and/or counseling services.

  • Observe and interview students and conduct thorough ERMHS assessments and evaluations; administer and interpret results of psychological assessment tests; write detailed and individualized reports concerning psychological observations, assessments and evaluations; provide input in the formulation of educational, developmental and remediation plans and strategies for various disabilities, disorders and other student issues.

  • Perform a variety of professional activities involved in the observation, assessment and treatment of mental health issues among the student population at assigned school sites.

  • Conduct Functional Behavior Assessment/Special Circumstance Independent Assessment (FBA’s/SCIA’s), including SCIA reviews and assist in the development and monitoring the integrity of behavior intervention plans/independence plans for special education students; assist in the development of behavior supports for regular education students.

  • Attend and participate in IEP, early intervention/pre-referral meetings and other assigned meetings and conferences for both regular and special education students; collaborate with staff and administrators in the formulation, development and implementation of IEP’s, behavior plans and related services, and goals and objectives.

  • Counsel students individually and in small groups using a variety of data gathering and therapy techniques to monitor progress.

  • Maintain appropriate documentation required by law (i.e. assessment reports, IEP’s registers, Medi-cal billing, therapy/progress notes, data collection on goals, etc).

  • Provide crisis intervention and counseling for students and families during crisis situations as needed. Serve as a resource to site and district personnel and members of the school community concerning youth services.

  • Consult and work collaboratively with all school district personnel, parents and other agencies.

  • Attend and participate in various site and district based meetings, in-services, committees and workshops as requested.

  • Supervise school psychologist interns as assigned.

  • Develop, implement and conduct in-service training sessions for parents and staff as requested.

  • Travel between work locations to serve various sites and attend meetings and in-services.

  • Perform observations and assessments at off-site locations (or at locations other than traditional school setting).

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE OF

Federal and State laws and regulations surrounding the provision of special education services and district policies and procedures; principles, methods, techniques, strategies, and trends in educational, social, and emotional adjustment assessment functions; applicable and appropriate psychological and achievement instruments, techniques, and procedures; social services and youth services agencies; social, emotional and behavioral characteristics of pre-school and school age students; evaluation and research techniques, strategies and procedures; basic computer and instructional technology skills.

ABILITY TO

Effectively and efficiently assess students and aid them in analyzing and developing alternative solutions to behavioral, educational, social and emotional issues and concerns; conduct, analyze, and effectively utilize a variety of individual and group counseling techniques applicable to students with learning, behavioral and emotional needs; effectively work with site and district personnel, parents, social services and youth service agencies in resolving student issues and learning plans; organize and manage a caseload at multiple sites; communicate effectively in oral and written form; establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with all stakeholders; follow applicable state and federal timelines; understand and carry out oral and written directions with minimal accountability controls; establish and maintain effective organizational, public and community relationships.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions requires the following physical demands: hearing and speaking to exchange information and make presentations; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard; have a means of transportation to conduct work; seeing to conduct inspections of data; and occasional lifting of boxes, bending or reaching for files and testing materials, etc. Weight of materials will vary, but generally less than fifty (50) pounds. Generally, the job requires 70% sitting, 15% walking and 15% standing. May be required to correctly lift or restrain a child physically if needed. Will work with students who have significant academic and social/emotional needs. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations, a generally hazard free environment and in a clean atmosphere.

LICENSES/ CREDENTIALS/ EXPERIENCE

Pupil Personnel Services—School Psychology or equivalent

Must pass pre-employment physical examination and fingerprint clearance following an offer of employment.
