JOB DESCRIPTION
PRIMARY FUNCTION
Under the supervision of the Coordinator of Integrated Student Supports, the School Counselor is a member of the comprehensive counseling and guidance program staff working with students in accordance with the American School Counseling Association (ASCA) National Standards; consults and collaborates with teachers, parents, and staff to enhance their effectiveness in helping students; provides support to other school educational programs.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Specific responsibilities will include but will not be limited to the following:
Participate in activities, which contribute to the effective delivery of educational service: cooperate and collaborate with other professionals in enhancing the education of students; establish and maintain effective relationships with staff and administrators; communicate with administrators, teachers and staff, students, parents, and the community regarding the counseling and guidance program and its role in the educational program.
Counsel small groups and individual students: provide individual and group assistance to students regarding the academic, career (life plans) and personal/social issues: Conduct structured, goal oriented counseling sessions to meet short-term identified needs of individuals and groups of students.
Provide prevention and intervention services: contribute to the effective delivery and implementation of prevention and intervention services for students such as the conflict resolution, crisis intervention, and student assistance programs.
Guide and counsel students through the development of academic, career (life skills) and personal/social life plans: collaborate with school personnel to assist students in making a smooth transition from elementary school to middle school to high school.
Implement the school counseling and guidance program curriculum : conduct counseling and guidance learning activities in the classroom for each grade level during the year in collaboration with the teaching staff in accordance with ASCA National Standards.
Plan, evaluate, and revise the counseling and guidance program : review the counseling and guidance program annually with other district counselors and administrators; establish a planning calendar for counseling and guidance program activities; evaluate the site counseling and guidance program.
Participate as a member of the Comprehensive Student Assistance Team process.
Utilize district, data management system for documentation of referral, delivery and evaluation of Social Work services.
Conduct Risk Assessments and facilitate linkage to students to appropriate support services.
Provide behavioral consultation services to school staff.
Support school teams in collection, analysis, and utilization of data based decision-making.
Provide professional development at site staff meetings at assigned school sites.
KNOWLEDGE OF
Federal and State laws and ethical standards and district procedures regarding school counselors, students and their families and the safety and protection of students; mediation and conflict resolution strategies; national standards for school counseling; effective counseling theories and practices; oral and written communication skills.
ABILITY TO
Organize, plan, evaluate, and revise the counseling and guidance program: review the counseling and guidance program annually with other district counselors and administrators; establish a planning calendar for counseling and guidance program activities; evaluate the site counseling and guidance program; maintain confidentially and use discretion.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT
The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions requires the following physical demands: hearing and speaking to exchange information and make presentations; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard; have a means of transportation to conduct work; seeing to conduct inspections of data; and occasional lifting of boxes and equipment and bending or reaching for files and equipment. Weight of materials will vary, but generally less than fifty (50) pounds. Generally, the job requires 35% sitting, 30% walking and 35% standing. May be required to correctly transfer or restrain a child physically if needed. Will work with students who have significant academic and social/emotional needs. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations, a generally hazard free environment and in a clean atmosphere.
LICENSES/ CREDENTIALS/ EXPERIENCE
Possession of any of the following credentials: Valid California Pupil Personnel Services Credential in School Counseling
Must pass pre-employment physical examination and fingerprint clearance following an offer of employment.
DESIRED
Previous counseling experience; Bilingual English/Spanish ability desirable
EDUCATION
Master’s degree required
SALARY
Placement on the certificated salary schedule
