DEFINITION

Under general direction, utilizes computer aided design and drafting software to develop schematic design level drawings for facilities and grounds projects; digitizes, indexes and maintains project drawings, maps, photographs and related records for all facilities and maintenance projects; drafts and documents as-built changes in district drawings and other records to reflect known field modifications; and performs general support activities during the planning and implementation of facilities and maintenance projects.

TYPICAL DUTIES

Conceptualizes and designs initial plans for new and existing grounds and facilities in accordance with district needs; develops recommendations for the use and optimization of indoor and outdoor spaces; and drafts schematic plans of landscaping and facilities using computer aided design and drafting (CADD) software.

Performs preliminary site visits to assess space, drainage and grading considerations for landscape design and grounds projects; assesses size, flow, and purpose within existing facilities; takes photographs, measures internal and external areas, makes calculations, and prepares sketches and field notes to document dimensions and placement for reference during the drafting of schematic drawings; gathers related preliminary information for contracted architects and engineers to review; and schedules and participants in site walks with contractors as assigned.

Creates and updates the placement and layout of landscaping, hardscaping, grounds, and irrigation and drainage systems; develops and drafts plans for the modernization of existing landscaping and gardens to improve sustainability, function, and visual appeal; and may occasionally participate in the completion of gardening and grounds projects, as assigned.

Recommends modifications for nonstructural alteration and remodeling of existing building structures to optimize space, functionality, and visual appeal and drafts corresponding schematic plans; may provide input regarding the interior design of new facilities to management, consultants and contracting agencies.

Performs general support during the planning and implementation of facilities and maintenance projects; acts as a district resource to staff during the completion of grounds and maintenance projects; visits landscaping and building modernization sites; coordinates with management, supervisory and professional trade employees to develop technical solutions for the resolution of delays and challenges; modifies project scopes and updates schematic plans as needed; and communicates with architectural, civil, mechanical, electrical and structural engineering contractors throughout project planning and implementation as directed.

Reviews and interprets schematic drawings, architectural blueprints, construction documents, technical records, and related specifications; identifies and assesses revisions, repairs, and reroutes to grounds and facilities; drafts and documents as-built changes in architectural blueprints, schematic drawings and related records to ensure plans reflect known modifications; and recreates and traces records as needed.

Converts maintenance, grounds and facilities project plans into computerized records; scans, digitizes and electronically indexes drawings, blueprints and technical documentation; organizes and maintains document control for all facilities and maintenance project drawings, photographs and related records; replicates and reproduces blueprints, schematics, maps and other drawings; and maintains other computerized data and records as required.

Coordinates with Division of State Architect (DSA) to ensure projects are closed and certified in accordance with state regulations and requirements.

Maintains district design guides and preferred product data sheets; may assist management and supervisory staff in developing initial design parameters, cost estimates, identifying preferred materials; and projecting the amount of labor required for the completion of projects; and may provide input to administrators regarding details relating to vendor and consultant service needs.

Utilizes specialized software and equipment, including that specific to the development, scanning and recording of schematic and architectural design plans; develops and maintains other computerized data and records as needed.

May perform initial research and develop preliminary recommendations pertaining to safety, structural, zoning and environmental standards; may participate in the development of capacity projections and the drawing of school boundaries; performs research, interprets regulations and policies, and assesses relevant trends; and prepares technical reports and presentations as directed.

Attends training seminars and courses to remain current in the latest techniques and technology of schematic planning and development, landscape design and interior design; attends a variety of meetings, as assigned.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Knowledge of: Form, function and space creation; construction standards and methods; landscape planning and design; regenerative design and sustainable use of resources; methods of energy and water efficiency, conservation and environmental quality enhancement; Division of State Architect (DSA) requirements and building codes, ordinances and safety requirements; California sustainability requirements specified by CALGreen Code; graphic communications techniques and tools; techniques necessary for estimating work costs; and District needs, buildings, equipment, and policies.

Ability to: Utilize complex technology and related equipment, including but not limited to computer aided design and drafting; interpret blueprints, schematics and diagrams; read and understand regulations and codes; estimate budgetary and staffing needs; establish and maintain effective and cooperative relationships with co-workers, site and District staff, students and others; and communicate effectively orally and in writing;

Essential Physical and Mental Activities and Work Environment: Sufficient finger dexterity to keyboard; sufficient stamina to stand, walk, sit, climb, kneel, crawl, reach, twist, crouch, squat, balance and bend; strength to transport objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Must be able to hear and respond to verbal safety warnings and ordinary conversation. Must have visual acuity to spend extended periods of time reviewing schematic and architectural design plans, both electronically and on printed documents.

Must have sufficient mobility to travel between the various sites and move around all types of terrain and climb/stoop over/under buildings in order to observe maintenance and construction projects. Work is conducted occasionally in outdoor environments. Generally the job requires 60% sitting, 30% walking and 20% standing

Typical Background: Any combination of training and experience that demonstrates the knowledge and abilities to perform the typical duties. A usual way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be graduation from high school, preferably supplemented by courses in construction, landscape design, interior design, or architecture, and two years of experience in any of the following areas:
- Skilled work experience utilizing computer aided design and drafting (CADD) software to draft schematic designs;
- Skilled work experience in a construction trade or as a project engineer; or
- Specialized work training in the performance of landscaping design, architectural design and/or space planning.

An Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degree in computer aided design, drafting and planning or in construction can be substituted for the experience requirement.

Coursework leading to a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree in computer aided design, drafting and planning or in construction is desirable.

Licenses and/or Certificates: Possession of a valid Class C California driver's license. Must meet District vehicle and liability insurance requirements. May be required to obtain job-related certificates after appointment.
