CLASS SPECIFICATION
DEFINITION
Under general supervision of the Maintenance/Grounds Supervisor, performs skilled pest control duties; trains and monitors staff in proper pest control procedures and applications; maintains all required inventory, safety, and compliance records; performs other lead and skilled grounds worker duties; performs other related duties as assigned.

TYPICAL DUTIES
Performs skilled pest control duties; visually inspects school sites and other District property for evidence of infestation of noxious animals and insects; determines most efficient, effective, and safest application of control such as, but not limited to, granulated pesticides, gels and pastes, refillable bait stations, sprays, and self contained bait stations and blocks; determines where to spray, place poisons, or traps; posts notices on District property where pesticides and insecticides are being used; remains current on a wide variety of chemical agents and control techniques; purchases, selects, stores, and mixes chemicals, poisons, and sprays in the control of noxious animals and insects; maintains and stores pest control equipment; trains other grounds workers on the proper application of insecticides, pesticides, and herbicides.
Keeps records and oversees compliance regarding pest control activities; maintains compliance records indicating the purpose and location of the pesticides being used, types of stored chemical agents, trapping of noxious animals (e.g., mice, rats, squirrels, and skunks), emergency procedures, MSDS sheets, and labels of chemical agents; monthly, submits compliance reports to County agricultural office with the aforementioned information; maintains compliance with State pest control programs (e.g., Healthy School Act and Integrated Pest Management Act) and agencies; provides support for storm water runoff program, such as surveying storm water outlets at each school, cleaning drains, changing biofilters and filter grates, etc. as instructed by County or Director of Maintenance and Operations.
Performs grounds leadworker duties; schedules, plans, and inspects the work of a group of Grounds Maintenance Worker I incumbents in the following tasks: cutting, trimming, edging, and pruning landscaped areas at schools or offices; removing debris from lawns; fertilizing plants, new grass, shrubs, and trees; operating small power and manual equipment for mowing and edging lawns such as small- to medium-sized riding mowers, power hand mowers, weed whips, edgers, hedge shears; may plan renovation or grounds improvement projects; trains Ground Maintenance Worker I employees; performs related duties as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
The Pest Control Leadworker performs skilled pest control duties, trains all grounds staff in pest control procedures and applications, performs other compliance program support, and leads a small crew of Grounds Maintenance Worker I positions in routine grounds maintenance.
The Irrigation Specialist performs skilled work in the installation, repair, modification, and maintenance of irrigation/sprinkler systems. The Grounds Maintenance Worker II operates large grounds maintenance equipment, performs work which is skilled and complex, and/or leads a small crew of Grounds Maintenance I positions.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
Knowledge of: pest control prevention and eradication techniques; pesticide application equipment; pesticide mixing, formulas and procedures for mixing, loading, and use; State and Federal laws and regulations relating to pesticide application; insect, rodent, nematode, and other pest impact on environment; life cycle and habitats of pests; basic mathematics; standard safety practices for pest control.
Ability to: judiciously spray, treat, and bait pests to control their infestation; read, interpret, and apply laws, regulations, policies, and procedures, relating to pest control and other grounds maintenance functions; explain and instruct others on pest control application, laws, regulations, policies, and procedures; keep accurate notes, records, and maps; prepare reports; identify common pests in the field; calibrate pesticide application instruments; perform tasks safely; work cooperatively with co-workers and around students, school staff, and the general public; understand and follow oral instructions; watch for and report safety hazards on school grounds and with equipment; read, understand and apply cautions on warning labels of supplies and chemicals; lead a small crew effectively.
Essential Physical Activities and Work Environment: Sufficient stamina to stand, walk, sit, climb, kneel, crawl, reach, twist, crouch, squat, balance and bend to perform pest control technician duties on a daily basis for eight hours a day; strength to regularly transport equipment and objects weighing up to 75 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds; mobility to climb and descend ladders; sufficient finger dexterity to operate tools and equipment; stamina sufficient to perform manual labor on a daily basis; sufficient hearing to understand instructions; and vision sufficient to read fine print, identify safety hazards, and see children in close proximity to the work area.
Must have sufficient mobility to drive trucks to District sites daily; ability to tolerate noise and exposure to chemicals and fertilizers. Work is conducted in adverse weather conditions.
Typical Background: Any combination of training that demonstrates the knowledge and abilities to perform the typical duties. A usual way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be a high school education and two years experience as a State certified pest control technician or operator. Grounds maintenance experience is also desirable.
Licenses and/or Certificates: Possession of a California Department of Food and Agriculture Qualified Applicator's License. Possession of a valid Class C California driver’s license. Must meet District vehicle and liability insurance requirements. May be required to obtain other job-related certificates after appointment. Possession of a California Arborist Certificate is desirable.
Qualifications: In order to be considered qualified for a vacancy in this classification, a candidate must possess the required background and successfully demonstrate such background, knowledge, skills and abilities through an examination process.
