CLASS SPECIFICATION
DEFINITION
Under the supervision of the Director of Information Systems, is responsible for the day-to-day operation and maintenance of District-wide network equipment and interconnects, and related management and monitoring software. This employee is also responsible for managing, maintaining, documenting, and securing the District’s WiFi deployment. Assists Computer Technician IIs in troubleshooting potentially network-related issues and maintains all configuration settings according to District policy.

TYPICAL DUTIES
Creates and maintains network configuration standards, specifications, and guidelines to be followed by all Technology Services employees.
Ensures all network-connected device monitoring sensors are online and operational at all times to support the District Helpdesk.
Assists Computer Technician IIs in interpreting, diagnosing, and taking action on system exceptions.
Proactively maintains all deployed network equipment such as switches, wireless controllers, routers, wireless access points, firewalls, VPN concentrators, web filters, intrusion prevention systems, to ensure secure and uninterrupted access to network resources.
Reviews specifications and translates these specifications into access policies, filter settings, and network configuration changes to effectively meet the District’s goals.
Designs, tests, implements, secures, and documents all network systems for use by authorized groups and individuals. Maintains lists and reports on District technology assets.
Keeps all District monitoring software collection points and configuration up-to-date and available for use by technology staff.
Maintains firewall, VPN, and intrusion logs.
Troubleshoots and resolves WAN, LAN, and WiFi issues throughout the District.
Periodically verifies network configurations, security, system health, performance and utilization trends, and makes actionable recommendations to the Director.
Takes swift action on network-based security events reported by District monitoring tools. Troubleshoots complex network issues and regularly meets with other IT Engineers to coordinate system changes and schedule outage windows.
Configures, monitors, and regularly tests, and reports on the health of all network-connected uninterruptable power supplies to ensure adequate protection for equipment critical to the District’s Mission.
Coordinates UPS battery replacements with users and technical team.
Plans for growth and support for future needs.
Documents processes, software and hardware installation, upgrades, and schedules regular maintenance.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
A Director, Information Systems oversees the design, installation, upgrading, and operation of enterprise technology to ensure it meets the needs of the District and is properly aligned with the District Technology Plan. An IT Engineer – Network tests, plans, and executes enterprise-level network tasks and performs the day-to-day management and maintenance of network systems and infrastructure while an IT Engineer – Server tests, plans, and executes enterprise-level server tasks and performs the day-to-day management and maintenance of District-wide server, database, and backup systems. The Computer Technician II performs technical and complex work to install, manage, repair, optimize, and maintain a variety of end-user computing platforms and peripheral equipment.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
Knowledge Of: IPv4 and IPv6 LAN and WAN system design and operation, enterprise operations and security; network hardware and software; routing protocols and their application; packet inspection and diagnostic tools; reporting tools, industry best-practices, and enterprise network operations and maintenance; network design and documentation practices; troubleshooting techniques, diagnostics, configuration and failure scenario testing, optimization, and implementing corrective actions.
Ability To: Diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve network-related problems; design, install, and configure network hardware and software; monitor, analyze, and optimize network architecture for effective and efficient operations; read and comprehend complex technical materials; provide technical support to department and site users; explain technical material and procedures to technical and non-technical staff members; communicate effectively in writing and orally; establish and maintain effective working relationships with District employees, vendors, and outside parties; plan and organize work; create and meet schedules and deadlines; work independently with minimal direction.
Essential Physical Activities And Work Environment: Work is performed in computer work rooms, District offices, school site offices, and classrooms and requires travel and access between these various locations. Sufficient strength and agility to lift, carry and transport microcomputers and peripheral equipment weighing up to 60 pounds.
Incumbents are subject to traveling to District sites, noise from equipment, fumes from chemicals, and exposure to high voltage; must operate insured personal vehicle to transport computers, parts, and repair equipment to various District or school sites. Incumbent will be required to respond to after-hours outages to reduce the impact of these outages on District staff. The job generally requires 34% sitting, 33% walking, and 33% standing.
Typical Background: Any combination of training and experience that demonstrates the knowledge and abilities to perform the typical duties. A usual way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be graduation from a two year college with an associate degree and four years of experience as a Network Engineer or equivalent.
Licenses And/Or Certifications: Valid Class C California driver’s license and the use of a personal automobile is required. Must meet District vehicle and liability insurance requirements, as appropriate. Must possess a current Cisco or HP networking certification at the time of hire or an equivalent combination of experience and knowledge. May be required to obtain other job-related certificates after appointment.
