Dual Language Immersion Program

In a global society, the ability to speak more than one language is essential for our future leaders. That’s why EUSD is pleased to offer the Dual Language Immersion Program at four elementary schools: Farr Avenue, Glen View, Lincoln, and Pioneer.

In addition, students may continue on their pathway to biliteracy at Mission Middle School. Beginning in fall 2019, the Dual Language Immersion Program will be offered at Mission for students who meet the criteria. These students will take their Social Studies class in Spanish, and an elective of Spanish Literacy that includes reading Spanish literature and writing essays in Spanish.

Culminating Events

The Escondido Union School District (EUSD) is dedicated to actualizing the unlimited potential of every learner, as outlined in our Framework for the Future. This commitment is exemplified through the Dual Language Immersion Program (DLP), which provides students with unique opportunities to develop critical skills in bilingualism, biliteracy, and cultural understanding. As part of this program, students participate in special culminating events in both fifth and eighth grade, where they showcase their academic growth and demonstrate the power of bilingual communication in real-world contexts.

Fifth Grade: "Ecosystems in Action"

Aligned with their science curriculum and field trip experience, fifth-grade DLP students engage in a Project-Based Learning (PBL) unit focused on ecosystems. They explore real-world environmental challenges, conduct research, and develop solutions, which they present in both English and Spanish to a panel of administrators and district personnel. This experience fosters them as Empowered Learners and Creative Problem Solvers, encouraging curiosity and self-direction. This opportunity strengthens their ability to think critically, communicate effectively in both languages, and apply their learning beyond the classroom.

Eighth Grade: "Engaging in Conflict Resolution: Building Bridges and Breaking Barriers"

At the middle school level, students take on a social studies-driven PBL centered around historical and contemporary conflicts. This initiative cultivates Empathetic Collaborators and Ethical Scholars, as students analyze conflicts, propose resolutions, and demonstrate their understanding of complex global issues. They then present their findings bilingually to a panel of administrators and district personnel. This experience prepares them for high school and beyond, reinforcing their biliteracy skills and their ability to engage in meaningful dialogue across cultures.

The Lasting Impact of Biliteracy

These culminating events embody the principles of the EUSD Framework for the Future, showcasing students' growth as Critical Thinkers, Effective Communicators, and Empowered Learners. By applying bilingual skills in authentic scenarios, students gain confidence, cultural awareness, and a profound comprehension of their studies. The Dual Language Immersion Program not only bolsters academic success but also equips students with lifelong competencies that align with EUSD's vision to actualize the unlimited potential of every learner.
