JOB DESCRIPTION

PRIMARY FUNCTION

Under the direction of the Assistant Superintendent of Student Support Services or designee, the Audiologist serves as an audiological consultant to school districts by completing hearing evaluations and related reports; recommending related accommodations for instruction; assisting deaf and hard of hearing students from infant to young adult with hearing amplification and auditory skills; consulting with staff regarding auditory skills, issues, and instructional accommodations and methods; performing tasks including ordering, testing, fitting, tracking and maintenance of FM systems and conducting electroacoustic analysis of hearing aids; perform other related functions as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Specific responsibilities will include but will not be limited to the following:

  • Perform comprehensive audiological evaluations, prepare appropriate evaluation reports in a timely manner and interpret assessment results

  • Attend IEP team meetings and participate as part of a multidisciplinary IEP team

  • Assume case management responsibilities for students with audiological services listed in the IEP

  • Consult with districts and their IEP teams to review independent audiological evaluations for hearing and auditory processing and assist teams with appropriate accommodations and interventions to meet the needs of individual students

  • Consult with professional staff within the districts or other agencies concerning educational needs of students

  • Analyze classroom noise and acoustics; present recommendations for improving the listening environment and the use of personal, group and classroom amplification and assistive listening devices

  • Monitor equipment for auditory amplification, including FM systems and hearing aids and provide training and support to parents and staff members ensuring that the equipment is used and cared for properly; provide assistance in equipment repairs

  • Provide specifications for individual and classroom amplification devices; assure proper fit through programming and verification of hearing aids and function of hearing aids and other listening devices

  • Operate a variety of specialized equipment such as an audiometer, hearing aid analyzer, hearing aid monitoring equipment, and computer

  • Provide in-service training on hearing, hearing impairments, hearing aids and FM systems, central auditory processing disorders, and implications for school personnel, children and parents

  • Provide information and instruction in the areas of speech-reading, listening and communication, instructional strategies, the use and care of amplification, and the self-management of hearing needs

  • Prepare and maintain a variety of records and reports

  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with administrators, parents, students, teachers, support staff, and a variety of public and private agencies

  • Perform other related duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE OF

Federal and State laws and regulations surrounding the provision of special education services and district policies and procedures; principles, theories, techniques and strategies pertaining to the teaching and instruction of students with deaf and hard of hearing needs; educational curriculum and instructional goals and objectives, and the educational trends and research findings pertaining to students with disabilities; behavior management and behavior shaping strategies; basic computer and instructional technology skills; current technology, usage and functions of assistive technology and communication devices, computers, and a variety of hardware and software; accommodations and modifications for students.

ABILITY TO

Assess, develop, and implement goals for aural rehabilitation for students with mild to profound hearing losses; set, fit, and troubleshoot a variety of types of classroom amplification; maintain records and prepare reports; organize, plan and deliver professional development activities and training; collaborate and communicate effectively both orally and in writing; establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with all stakeholders; mentor, peer coach and conduct professional development; design data tracking sheets for students; ability to maintain, analyze and synthesize data; follow applicable state and federal timelines; understand and carry out oral and written directions with minimal accountability controls.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions requires the following physical demands: hearing and speaking to exchange information and make presentations; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard; have a means of transportation to conduct work; seeing to conduct inspections of data; and occasional lifting of boxes and equipment and bending or reaching for files and equipment. Weight of materials will vary, but generally less than fifty (50) pounds. Generally, the job requires 35% sitting, 30% walking and 35% standing. May be required to correctly transfer or restrain a child physically if needed. Will work with students who have significant academic and social/emotional needs. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations, a generally hazard free environment and in a clean atmosphere.

LICENSES/ CREDENTIALS/ EXPERIENCE

Valid California Clinical or Rehabilitative Services Credential with authorization in Audiology.

Must pass pre-employment physical examination and fingerprint clearance following an offer of employment.

DESIRED

Experience as an audiologist in a public school setting.
