TEACHER ON SPECIAL ASSIGNMENT: COACH

JOB DESCRIPTION

PRIMARY FUNCTION

Under the supervision of the Assistant Superintendent of Ed Services or their designee, the Coach will work with a team of district TOSAs in support of staff who are responsible for addressing the CA State Standards. TOSA’s will provide support in a content area in which the TOSA is credentialed to teach. The coaching team will facilitate and help coordinate professional development activities, curate, and develop resources, develop and analyze formative and summative assessments, integrate the use of technology for use by both certificated and classified employees. They will collaborate with site and district administrators in their efforts to increase student achievement.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Specific responsibilities will include but will not be limited to the following:

  • Is a member of a team of district TOSAs that facilitates plans and delivers professional development.

  • Curates and develops educational resources for use in the classroom.

  • Assists the district team of coaches to support the growth of each member of the team as well as the learning organization using strong collaborative processes and tools.

  • Supports clear articulation across all departments, grade, and content areas.

  • Provides district leadership and builds capacity for teachers with the implementation of the California State Standards.

  • Plans and assists teachers and teams in implementing research based best practices, through the use of data to improve student achievement.

  • Supports sites in collaboratively planning weekly lessons / units with both individual teachers as well as grade level/content teams.

  • Serves as consultant/peer coach with teachers to model/demonstrate effective instructional practices and provide timely feedback to assist and support them in the implementation of the California State Standards.

  • Supports teachers in understanding data.

  • Provides support to teacher teams in analyzing formative and summative data.

  • In collaboration with site and district teams, supports the planning and development of intervention strategies and assists in monitoring student progress.

  • Develops positive professional relationships with teachers and instructional leaders.

  • Supports instructional leaders in communicating consistent messages between all sites and Educational Services.

  • Integrates technology into planning, learning, and record keeping.

  • Works with teachers to provide appropriate strategies to meet the needs of special populations of students including English Language Learners, Special Education, Economically Disadvantaged, and Gifted and Talented.

  • Participates in related duties as assigned in accordance with the school/system policies and practices.

  • Serve as a lead member of the District Curriculum Adoption Committee.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE OF

Federal and State laws and regulations surrounding the provision of education services and district policies and procedures; current technology, usage and functions of assistive technology and communication devices, computers, and a variety of hardware and software; accommodations and modifications for students.

ABILITY TO

Organize, plan and deliver professional development activities and training; collaborate and communicate effectively both orally and in writing; establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with all stakeholders; mentor, peer coach and conduct professional development; design data tracking sheets for students; ability to maintain, analyze and synthesize data; follow applicable state and federal timelines; understand and carry out oral and written directions with minimal accountability controls.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions requires the following physical demands: hearing and speaking to exchange information and make presentations; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard; have a means of transportation to conduct work; seeing to conduct inspections of data; and occasional lifting of boxes and equipment and bending or reaching for files and equipment. Weight of materials will vary, but generally less than fifty (50) pounds. Generally, the job requires 35% sitting, 30% walking and 35% standing. May be required to correctly transfer or restrain a child physically if needed. Will work with students who have significant academic and social/emotional needs. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations, a generally hazard free environment and in a clean atmosphere.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong content area knowledge and pedagogical skills.

  • Experience in curriculum development.

  • Experience in data assessment and evaluation.

  • Experience facilitating and leading district/school site committees.

  • Successful experience as a presenter/trainer/facilitator of adult and student learners at the district and site levels.

  • Demonstrates success in working with English Language Learners, Special Education and low performing students, socio-economically disadvantaged and Gifted and Talented students.

  • Demonstrates effective communication and presentation skills.

  • Successful teaching experience at the elementary and/or middle school levels.

LICENSES/ CREDENTIALS/ EXPERIENCE

Possession of a valid California Teaching Credential appropriate for the assignment. Possession of valid California English Learner Authorization.

Minimum of three years teaching experience.

Must pass pre-employment physical examination and fingerprint clearance following an offer of employment.

EDUCATION

Bachelor’s Degree Required.

SALARY

Placement on the Certificated salary schedule.
