On Saturday, March 3, fifth and sixth grade teams representing all 23 EUSD schools participated in the 2018 Math Field Day at Del Dios Academy of Arts and Sciences. Consisting of seven students each, the teams worked together to solve a series of hands-on math and engineering problems. Teams with the highest scores received medals at the end of the event.

In addition to the student competition, attendees had the unique opportunity to experience a presentation by Dr. Edward Price, professor of physics at California State University San Marcos (CSUSM):

Thanks to a five-year grant from the National Science Foundation, CSUSM and EUSD have collaborated to create the Mobile Making STEM Afterschool Program. Now in its second year, the program provides STEM enrichment opportunities at all EUSD middle schools. During his talk, Dr. Price discussed the Mobile Making Program, demoed a science experiment, and introduced a university student who shared the story of her pathway into STEM and her experiences at CSUSM.

In total, 168 students and their family members participated in this year’s Math Field Day.
